JOB DESCRIPTION:
News Not Noise is hiring an experienced journalist to write a biweekly newsletter that publishes at the end of day on Mondays and Fridays (3pm PT/6pm ET). This is a freelance remote position.
As a newsletter writer for New Not Noise, you will work with Jessica Yellin and the News Not Noise team to identify, research, and write the top news stories of the week in a newsletter for distribution twice weekly. You will communicate the news using clear, accessible language and sharp analysis to help audience members better understand important events – without giving them a panic attack. The role requires creative thinking about what should count as news; identifying experts, authors and creators for collaboration; surfacing under-reported stories and relevant lifestyle stories; and balancing difficult news with news that inspires awe, curiosity and even hope. The work will include campaign coverage as the election nears; an interest in politics will be helpful. People of all genders, races, orientations and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities:
Read, research, and report top news stories; monitor key news developments.
Pitch stories for inclusion in the newsletter and work closely with Jessica Yellin and the News Not Noise team to select those stories.
Write, edit, and distribute (via Substack) a biweekly ewsletter explaining the day’s stories using a smart, easy-to-understand style (examples here).
Track our work on social media to ensure the newsletter reflects the same priorities and tone and is a value-add.
Report and develop news explainers, breakdowns, look-aheads, or value-added pieces.
Identify stories that spark awe, curiosity, laughter, and compassion, reminding us of the good in life.
Format newsletter in Substack including selecting photos/images, embedding social media assets, and posting.
Work with tools to gain audience insights, boost engagement, and grow subscriptions.
ESSENTIALS:
2+ years journalism experience.
Sharp news writing skills including clear, concise language that doesn’t miss nuance.
Excellent news judgment, including ability to discern important stories, identify sources, and fact-check claims.
Familiarity with social media, trending topics, viral stories. You know it’s going to be viral before it’s viral.
Speed, accuracy and a determination to get it done.
Ability to work remotely, independently, and/or collaboratively.
Ability to consistently meet deadlines.
Ability to receive and incorporate editorial feedback.
Openness to pitch editorial ideas.
An eye for the unusual, curiosity and compassion are key.
Sense of humor is a must!
Familiarity with Substack and/or other newsletter distribution platforms is preferred.
Education:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2 years experience in journalism, journalism school, or work in politics, organizing or social action.

Job Description
News Not Noise is hiring two news content creators to produce daily news posts, videos, and stories across social media platforms. These are both freelance remote positions.
As a news content creator for New Not Noise, you will work with Jessica Yellin and the News Not Noise team to identify, research, and produce content about the top news and relevant lifestyle stories of the day. You will communicate the news using clear, accessible language and graphics to help audience members better understand important events – without giving them a panic attack. The role requires creative thinking about what should count as news, and a knack for identifying and capitalizing on social media trends and insights to create high-quality, high-performing content. The work will include campaign coverage as the election nears; an interest in politics will be helpful. People of all genders, races, orientations and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities:
Ideating, planning, and producing content for social media accounts, primarily Instagram but also TikTok, Threads, YouTube, etc. (Instagram content examples here)
Read, research, and pitch top news stories for content production; monitor key news developments; work closely with Jessica Yellin to curate news and identify stories that meet our mission.
Write scripts and caption copy for social media content.
Design graphics and other social media assets using Canva and/or other graphic design tools.
Track our newsletter to ensure social posts reflect the same priorities and tone and are a value-add.
Monitor social media trends and pitch innovative ways to keep our content reaching our target audience.
Work with tools to gain audience insights, boost engagement, and grow followers.
Essentials:
2+ years relevant experience.
Familiarity with Instagram and other social media platforms.
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
High-level problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail.
Excellent news judgment, including ability to discern important stories, identify sources, and fact-check claims.
